Well I've always loved The Beatles and although I have some curmudgeonly tendencies (I dislike other people's kittens, hate cotton candy, can't stand hyper cheerful holiday music, etc.) I actually adore birthdays!
This adoration probably began when I was five years old and my mother hosted a birthday party for me. We had games and one of these involved hopping around in sacks. That is, each child got his or her own sack within which he or she might hop.
What I loved of course was that all my showy able bodied friends immediately fell over. And they fell over repeatedly. And I remember one neighborhood bully who was famous for teasing all creatures great or small was bragging about his superior forward progress with his usual bravado when he fell over in his potato sack and thereby caused a mass collapse of the neighborhood's children directly on top of him. That was a beautiful thing. And the bully wet his pants which was also a beautiful thing since his corresponding shame ended his tyranny over the rest of us.
Of course there's also cake and if one is lucky there are assorted gifts.
But I think I like birthdays most of all because they're a good excuse to celebrate our friends.
Tomorrow is the birthday of David Gaynes whose disability blog reminds us daily of the joys and the struggles that are always part of our human lives. His insights and humor are amazing and best of all his blog isn't one of those sentimental places where "the kid with a disability" inspires adults who for some reason need motivation in order that they may get on with the business of being upright. David's blog is a true memoir in progress about the art of living with disabilities.
I urge you to visit David's blog and wish him a happy birthday (or say hi to him here...) As The Beatles said: "You say it's your birthday! Well it's my birthday too! Yeah!"
Jeez. I hope I don't need permission from Michael Jackson to type that?
S.K.
P.S. Oh my goodness, I can't BELIEVE my husband said he doesn't like other people's kittens. He was just KIDDING Claire! It's our 12 year old cat he doesn't like - calls her evil! Is she evil? No. Nasty? Yes. Evil...no.
Hahaha, no worries. No offense here.

What is it about men? Trying to be seen as all tough and curmudgeonly all time? This is a very common condition in the bloggysphere. And I think we need someone to analyze this situation.
Is there a Blogosphere Psychiatrist in the house?
We need an intervention!
Hating poor little kitties and puffy cotton candy? Pshaw!
SK, embrace that inner sweetheart that lurks just beneath the surface! You can't fool me! I know it's there!

Well, Blue Girl, as one of the feminine persuasion, I gotta tell you that I, too, hate cotton candy. I prefer dogs to cats, but bring on the kittens!
SK, do you need to talk about your issues with kittens? How about if you write a poem entitled "Bring on the Kittens"? Blue Girl, any other ideas? :)
