Does this sound like a perfect way to start the day or what?
"I got up early this morning and everyone else was sleeping. I made coffee and lit a fire, grabbed my favorite afghan and cuddled up on the couch with my newest book. A book that I bought a few days ago. And. A book I've already finished."
In her post Promises Kept. Chapter One., Blue Girl, author of the quote above, tells us of a promise she made to herself as one of her "BG's 2007 Resolutions". And the post was dated January 1, 2007! Day ONE and she had already kept her promise. Notice how she conveniently covered the rest of her list of resolutions though. It's now January 2 and I see no evidence of Promises Kept. Chapter Two. No pressure BG. But we'll be watching.
BG's post reminded me I need to buy firewood. It also got me to thinking - it wouldn't hurt me to rearrange some of my priorities and make more time for reading. I love the morning coffee ritual, but I prefer reading with a glass of Cabernet in my hand. I'll have to arrange for more time in the evening then won't I?
I have a book in mind. I actually started it before the holidays but well...you know. This book, called "Reasonable People" is not due to be published until the spring but it's available for pre-order. Written by Ralph James Savarese, it's his "Memoir of Autism & Adoption". On the back cover it says "Why would someone adopt a badly abused, nonspeaking, six-year-old from foster care?" Mr. and Mrs. Savarese did just that and this is their story. This is a book that I know Blue, from The Gimp Parade will want to add to her book list for the new year. Steve is about to read it and I know he'll review it here at a later date.
Speaking of Steve's reviewing a book, I'd like to remind you of the post he wrote discussing this book, A Family of Strangers, by Deborah Tall. Unfortunately Deborah passed away last October and this post, in her honor, has been googled by strangers almost daily. Deborah was so admired.
Back in the days when this blog was new and had almost no readers (imagine that!) I made this Free Book Offer in a blatant attempt to help spread the word about Steve's most recent book: Eavesdropping: A Memoir of Blindness and Listening. Well, there's been so much chit chat about books by bloggers the past few days, I thought I'd present the offer yet again. Hey, books don't sell themselves now do they?!
The offer still stands.

I'd love a copy! I'll contact you offlist with my mailing address.
If enough folks want to read Savarese (I'd like to, and I know others are planning to, or could be persuaded), maybe we can organize a bloggers' book discussion of it, or another book, sometime down the line....?

Hi Connie! Thank you for the link. Even though it's Jan 2, I did not start and finish another book today. But! I did do something very brave today. It was an emotional thing and I'm just trying to figure out if it's appropriate for a post or not.
I didn't even know, when I made my list out, that this thing was even in my future.
Oh well. Every new day is certainly a challenge.
Thank you for the link, Connie!

Connie, I thought I'd sent you an e-mail about getting a free copy of Eavesdropping back in the fall. I never got a copy, so assumed I got in too late. So I'll make the request again. I don't have a blog, but I do commit to spreading the word far and wide about the book. Heck, I've probably brought 10 copies of POTB for family and friends. And the offer still holds to try and set up a reading for Steve here in Rochester.
I'll send you my snail mail address later.
Now about those New Year's Resolutions. You heard it here first:
* Finish my memoir, Lost and Found, and have it ready to send it to agents/publishers on 1/1/08. I've already made progress; I sent a new chapter off to my PLU mentor yesterday, and have a goal of two more chapters this month.

Connie- after enjoying Steve's first book so much, I bought "Eavesdropping" before I started reading your blog. I was happy to pay for it and will be happy to pay for any of Steve's future books. :)

Every time I see Deborah's name it reminds me to live well. . . in various ways.
