Word has arrived that the publishers of the Chicken Soup for the Soul books are now casting about forinspirational stories for a collection to be titled: "Chicken Soup for the Special Needs Soul".
I'm getting Jerry Lewis on the line. I wonder if he's behind this?
I'm not a spiritual miser, I swear.
But after this what's next? "Chicken Soup for the Left Handed Soul?" Or how about: "Chicken Soup for the Accountant's Soul" or "Chicken Soup for the Uni-brow's Soul"?
I'm thinking of putting together a collection called: "Chicken Soup for the Critical Thinker's Soul"--a book that would consist entirely of recipes. I'll bet Heidegger had a really good chicken soup recipe? And Mrs. Nabokov? She had a chicken soup recipe that could pull old Vladimir away from his butterflies.
I am a person with a disability. My soul is no different from the fellow who mows lawns in my neighborhood and who is trying to feed his family.
I'm against the sentimentalizing of souls according to physical or neurological disability.
Books like the proposed volume revive and underscore the age old tendency to view people with disabilities as having received a compensatory gift from the gods.
Okay, everybody needs a hug. That's what the soup books are for. I'm just a grizzled disability rights advocate who has spent the last twenty years attempting to show the general public that "the disabled" are just like everyone else when we take away the cultural stigma.
Hmmm. Maybe a book called "Chicken Soup for Those Who Have Been Culturally Stigmatized"?
I think that might become a runaway best seller.

"Chicken Soup for the Uni-brow's Soul"
:)
My former 14 year old self probably could have used that one.
I passed your bloggy link off to a friend. I'm encouraging him to come over for a visit.

Um. Not that Steve's blog is the place to discuss this. But, yes Res, I did.
I looked just like Brook Shields.

Hey, at least they didn't call it "Chicken Soup for the Disabled Soul"!

Early this morning I came across Planet of the Blind, and began reading. While I enjoyed many of the other entries this one struck a deep cord.
As I read along I could not help but laugh out loud! I got such a kick out of: "Chicken Soup for Those Who Have Been Culturally Stigmatized"?
You've made my day!
